Federico Maria Cernuschi
Head of Materials for Energy Research Group
RSE

Graduated in Physics at the University of Milan, he started his professional career almost 30 years ago at the ENEL Environment and Materials Research Center focusing his research towards the development and application of techniques for the characterization of innovative materials and coatings in the energy sector. Later, with the transition to CESI in 2000, he had the opportunity to expand its expertise by coordinating research and development projects funded by industries, national and international institutions on the development and characterization of advanced materials for power generation plants. In RSE, from the foundation of the Research Center in 2006 up to 2013 he coordinated the activities of the Research Group on Large Power Generation Plants. Currently, as head of the “Materials for Energy” Research Group he guides research activities aimed at the development and characterization of innovative materials for energy applications. Thin film calcogenide photovoltaics, innovative materials for Na-ion batteries, perovskite based membranes for high temperature oxygen separation, ice-phobic and hydrophobic thin films for electric power lines conductors and insulators, thermal and/or environmental barrier coatings for hot parts of turbines and gas micro-turbines are the main ongoing research topics in the Research Group. As an expert in materials and characterization techniques, he has been a reviewer for research projects funded by the Italian Research Ministry and is member of some national and international Standard Committees. He is the RSE’s representative at the European Turbine Network (ETN) and the Energy Materials Industrial Research Initiative (EMIRI). He is author of over 60 articles published in international journals. He is one of the three representatives of Italy in MI challenge #6
