Shawn Brooks

Shawn is a 20 year veteran with the Denver (CO) Fire Department and currently serves as a lieutenant. For the last three years, he has been assigned to the Denver Fire Academy as the health and wellness coordinator which includes developing the health and wellness program, serving as the CPAT coordinator, and managing the Denver Fire Physical Therapy program. Shawn has helped implement the department’s rehab program, performance evaluation guidelines and return to duty programs. Additionally, Shawn serves as the strength and conditioning coach for the Denver fire academy and has been a peer fitness trainer for the last six years. Using his 22 year background in exercise physiology and fitness training, he is responsible for the yearly fitness assessments and oversees 24 peer fitness trainers that diligently work to perform VO2 and functional movement screens. Shawn feels that the best way to prepare and train firefighters is to treat them like functional athletes. He believes that everything firefighters do is awkward, whether its lifting bodies or moving hose or ladders, and those firefighters have to train to be good at these movements. His physical therapy team strives to help firefighters with current injuries as well as the prevention of others.
