António Ferreira da Costa was born in Portugal, 1953. He graduated in Electrical Engineering in the Technical University of Lisbon and holds Management Course Diplomas from IESE and INSEAD. He joined EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. in 1979 as commissioning engineer of Thermal Power Plants, having occupied several positions until he became Director of EDP Thermal Engineering Company, and up to 2001, he was in parallel member of the Board of Directors in companies where EDP had a stake – Elcogas in Spain, Deca in Guatemala, besides accompanying EDP acquisitions in Turbogas and HidroCantabrico. During this period, he was also responsible for R&D projects funded by the European Commission, where he acted as expert for energy. In 2001 and up to the end of 2004, he moved to Brazil, as CEO of EDP Engineering Company – ENERPRO, being also a member of the Board of Directors of Energest, Enerpeixe and Investco. In January 2005, he returned to Portugal, as Director for Investments in EDP Generation. He is nowadays member of the Board of Directors and responsible for the rebuilt of a major investment plan for hydro generation in Portugal. He is also member of the Board of generation companies in Brazil, and President of the Board of Directors of Empresa de Energia São Manoel. He is also Board member of EDP International.
