The Lobster Studio Debuts Its Character-Based,
Storybook-Inspired Stationery at NSS 2019

FEBRUARY 3, 2019 — NEW YORK — The Lobster Studio, a New York City-based greeting card company, made its debut at the 2019 National Stationery Show at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. The Lobster Studio's stationery features character-based, storybook-inspired art from Ken Crossland, an experienced children’s book designer with publisher Penguin Random House. The company is co-run by Crossland and his business and real-life partner, actor/producer Rachel Lauren James.

"As a children's book designer, I'm drawn towards art that tells the viewer a story," Ken explains about his choice of illustration style. "I love stationery because it lets you send someone a tiny story, and even better, it’s a story just for them.”

Their most popular line of cards, Fred + Nym, took center stage at the NSS. Based on the couple’s real-life cats, Fred + Nym stationery follows the adorable and endearing adventures of their two felines in New York City.

Beyond stationery, the Lobster Studio is also focused on social and environmental responsibility. Their cards are produced on 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper using vegetable-based inks, and are made in a facility powered entirely from renewable solar and wind energy.

Rachel Lauren James, co-owner, is particularly excited about this aspect of the company. “From the beginning, we felt like it was incredibly important to stand by some pretty strict environmental standards. Luckily, we’ve found some really great partners to help us achieve our goal.”

Additionally, the Lobster Studio gives a portion of their profits to charity. From their Fred + Nym line of stationery, they donate to no-kill animal shelters in the New York City area—especially important to them since the real-life Fred and Nym were adopted from such organizations. A portion of profits from Lobster Studio branded cards go to mental health awareness charities, another cause close to co-founder Ken Crossland.

“There's still too much stigma behind seeking help. We're supporting organizations that find assistance for those who need it, and remind them it's totally okay—and normal—to want it."

At the 2019 National Stationery Show, The Lobster Studio will be offering 14 individual designs, as well as five boxed sets. Their cards are A2 and A1/4-Baronial size, and MSRP from $4.50 to $5.00 for single cards, and $18.00 for boxed sets.
