Redwood Upper Grades
Redwood upper grades feature limited knots and other natural characteristics. Heartwood upper grades include Heart Clear and Heart B. Redwood heartwood is naturally resistant to termites and decay and features the dark, red hue that gives redwood its name. Sapwood upper grades include Clear and B Grade. Sapwood grades feature the darker heartwood as well as some of the lighter sapwood. The beauty of redwood sapwood upper grades cannot be underestimated as the variegation in tone can be particularly striking.
Performance Under Fire Exposure
The superior performance of redwood under fire exposure has been known for decades. Testing by numerous laboratories in response to strict standards for decking and siding material in California has reaffirmed redwood as a fire safe material. Redwood achieves Class B flame spread in accordance with ASTM E-84, Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials. Materials achieving Class B flame spread can be used safely and without restriction throughout all areas of California as defined in California Building Code Chapter 7A, Materials and Construction Methods for Exterior Wildfire Exposure.
