Family Business Sets Out to Fight Plastic Bag Problem

Family Run Company Aims to Tackle Plastic Problem

Stardust Sustainables is a new company on a big mission to tackle the plastic bag problem. Matthew Murray and Peter Murray of Cocoa Beach, FL and Park City, UT launched the company earlier last year.  Their flagship product is a 100% compostable & reusable shopping bag made of organic jute and cotton. Their plant-fiber bag is meant to replace traditional reusable bags found in grocery stores that still contain plastics and can’t be recycled.

“My hope is that by taking action on the plastic issue I will not only facilitate change but will also create a ripple effect that will inspire others to go out and do something that matters to them. We are all on the same team!” - Co-founder Matthew Murray

With many towns and cities across the U.S. implementing plastic bag fees or bans, Stardust is stepping up to fill the void of sustainable alternatives available on the market. Very few plastic or reusable bags actually get recycled because current facilities can’t manage mixed plastics. Stardust is  fool-proofing the system by utilizing a bag that nature can process and doesn’t rely on systems that aren’t economically or energetically viable. Compostable is a solution that bypasses that problem.  They are also making moves to be the sole-distributor of a Jute bioplastic which would replace traditional single-use plastics.

Here are some of the benefits of switching over to the model that Stardust Sustainables has brought to the table:

  • Their durable natural fiber blend won’t break like many other bags but has the benefit of composting in only 3-6 months, meaning users leave no trace with their use

  • On average one Stardust compostable bag will replace at least 1,000 single use plastic bags from ending up as environmental waste or stuck in a landfill

  • The production process of their natural material relies solely on natural rainfall and no additives or chemical processing during manufacturing

About Stardust Sustainables- Stardust started out as an idea inspired by Matt after traveling throughout SE Asia and saw plastic shopping bags completely covering what were once gorgeous beaches. He knew there was something they could do to help solve the problem after returning home and started testing the compostability of materials with Matt’s father Peter, a career landscape architect and horticulturist who wanted to make a bigger impact with his work.

“We believe as individuals we CAN make a difference, but with your help we WILL change the world.” -Matt
