EMERGING METALSMITH, BETHANY JAMES NAMED A TOP TEN FINALIST OF HALSTEAD GRANT

Metalsmith and jewelry designer Bethany James, founder of LEO Handcrafted Jewelry is named a Top Ten Finalist of the coveted Halstead Grant for emerging jewelry businesses. Contest host Halstead Bead, a family- owned jewelry supplier, introduced the annual competition in 2006 to support emerging designers by emphasizing the importance of a strong business plan. Applicants submit answers to 15 business questions in addition to design portfolios. The process is designed to help jewelry entrepreneurs create a strategy to kick-start their careers. Halstead Bead announces 10 Top Finalists each year, including Bethany James of LEO Handcrafted Jewelry.

Bethany graduated from CCAD in 2016 after majoring in fine arts for four years. During her studies, she focused in sculpture and small scale metals. While attending classes, Bethany worked as a professional goldsmith in Columbus for three years. In 2018, she left to pursue her own studio jewelry line LEO, which combines fine jewelry techniques with a contemporary jewelry style. Judge Hilary Halstead says, “Bethany’s business plan shows hustle and heart with an excellent three year plan exhibiting measurable goals and a detailed time line. Her jewelry line is beautiful and easy to wear. Hilary describes Bethany’s line as cozy and comfortable pieces that you love to wear, just like your favorite pair of jeans.

Bethany’s pieces are made from sterling silver with 14k gold accents and natural gemstones. Most of her collection runs from $25-800, though one-of-a- kind pieces will vary. Bethany’s jewelry can be found on her website at http://leogoods.com and at The Smithery in Grandview Heights. She also attends various festivals, events, and hosts workshops in the Midwest.
