NY NOW® Winter 2020

DESIGNER ROXI SUGER MAKES WOMEN FEEL NATURAL AND BEAUTIFUL WITH PLANT-BASED FIBERS & AN EARTH TONE COLOR PALETTE

Biddeford, Maine - When designer Roxi Suger launched her clothing brand, Angelrox® in NYC in 1999, her mission was to inspire comfort and joy. She aspired to create clothing in the US that would also help customers recognize their inherent beauty. She has achieved that goal many times over. For Roxi, success was tightly linked to a desire to give back and her vision quickly evolved to focus on sustainability and versatility as essential for women in the 21st century. This put her on the forefront of the movement toward eco-friendly clothing and slow fashion as opposed to disposable “fast” fashion.

Angelrox is handmade in the historic Pepperell Textile Mill in Biddeford, Maine, and the company operates two retail locations called Suger® that not only carry her signature collections but feature other makers who share a similar passion. Suger, along with her husband and partner, Julian Schlaver, employ over 25 talented individuals who embrace their mantra of inspiring joy and giving back to the community.

“We have passed many milestones along our journey. From the crippling aftermath of being in New York City during 911 to being featured on National Television in 2003 to surviving the economic downturn of 2008 by selling my designs on the streets of NYC, our business has been through a lot of ups and downs. Since relocating to Maine and bringing new energy to Biddeford it has been up, up, up. We have accomplished a lot and are ever grateful!” said Suger. “We have found that our measure of success comes with every single customer, or angels as we call them, that derives joy from what we do.”

Early on after launching her collection Roxi recognized the need to address the negative psychology and self-image issues that women suffer. She introduced “positive sizing”, labeling her clothing as “feather, bird, wing, song and joy” instead of the traditional XS, S, M, L, and XL. This change helped her customers start to view their bodies with more positivity and embrace their unique beauty.

The many ages, sizes and types of people who wear Angelrox® include those who find that some of the designs help them cope with medical conditions. One such product “The Band” is used by customers with alopecia who are looking for cozy solutions to keep wigs in place. 86.5% of women seek professional treatment each year to remedy hair loss, which can be extremely detrimental to a woman’s self image and emotional well being.

Customers have found much comfort from Suger’s adaptable and easy to wear designs and the superior softness of their bamboo knits against sensitive skin. Some of their top products include The Flirt which is a quintessential Angelrox layer that works as a versatile poncho, skirt, dress, etc., Opera Sleeves which has been seen on Diane Keaton and are a signature source of comfort and joy, providing cozy warmth for the hands and arms yet lightweight and breathable enough to offer sun protection, The Hourglass serves as an essential infinity scarf to comfort and warm the neck and head or a cozy stretchy comfort shaper and much more.
