NY NOW® Winter 2020

Sasha Association for Craft Producer, India presents- 'ROOH' , Handmade from Kashmir @ Winter 2020 NY NOW, Booth #1569

ROOH is a collection of exquisitely hand- painted Papier Mache, wooden utility products and Christmas decorations made by our skilled artisans from Kashmir. The collection showcases yet another dimension to Sasha’s application of traditional techniques which is anchored in contextualising traditional craft in a contemporary and unique way.

The collection comprises of two looks: one inspired by the simplicity found in nature and the other inspired by the minimalism of geometrical forms found in the motifs of Kashmir art. The idea is to capture the essence of intricate motifs and style present in the Kashmiriri craft by integrating Papier Maché into a collection of platters, decorative boxes, trays, pencil stands, chest of drawers, ring boxes, coaster sets, Christmas baubles and hangings.

Kashmir Paper Mache’ is a 15th century craft involving the transformation of paper pulp into intricately decorated products and artefacts.

About the Project

In September 2014, the State of Jammu & Kashmir experienced torrential monsoon rains causing the Jhelum River to breach its banks and inundating large parts of Srinagar, Kashmir. The Jhelum Tawi Flood Recovery Project (JTFRP) is to support the recovery and increase disaster resilience in Project Areas. Sarba Shanti Ayog (SSA), Sasha's development organization is undertaking a end-to-end cluster development project in Srinagar, Kashmir in collaboration with the Government of Kashmir, supported by the World Bank in India to promote the Paper Mache' craft.

ROOH is a platform and a tool created by Sasha to bridge the gap between the Paper Mache’ artisans of Zadibal in Srinagar of Kashmir in India; and the global world. So that artisans are empowered to carry their skill forward, as it were before, in a form that fits today.
