NY NOW® Winter 2020

10 Moving forward on people based products for the world

Going forward with our next level of innovations for NY NOW, Ohrna is consolidating on materials, designs and colors as well as experimenting in combining various aspects of our more successful products and towards a stronger voice of our brand.

Two fabrics, ikkat from southern and southeastern India and the traditional tie-dye ‘bandhni’ from western and northwestern desert regions with their vibrant colors have been loved by our customers and have become a staple of Ohrna as we continue to combine them in interesting ways with our base fabric, jute. We have also focused our work on four main earthy colors of jute, ensuring that one of them is the natural fiber that is derived from the jute plant.

Working with artisans in multicultural, multilingual India is very interesting. And working with our women makers who are on their incredible journey towards becoming artisans has been amazingly inspiring! They continue to fuel our passion to do better and more, so we can together embrace and spread goodness in this world as we bring to our wonderful customers, labors of our love.

Ohrna believes in responsible design. Our focus is fourfold: use of sustainable materials, employment of rural and home-bound women, preservation of rich craft traditions and packaging in up cycled materials. We train for free and often employ women with minimum skills. We design to customers' needs and also constantly adapt our designs for ease of making, for our makers.
