Silicon increases the secondary hardening response of medium-carbon secondary hardening steels such as H-11. However, silicon additions also result in an embrittlement coincident with peak secondary hardness. The first objective of this work is to determine the effect of silicon on the strength and toughness of a base secondary hardening steel. We have shown nickel additions to this base steel improve strength and toughness. Thus, the second objective of this work is to determine if nickel additions improve the toughness of silicon-modified secondary hardening steels.
