In order for bottom purging improvements to be successful in the specialty steel market, the bottom purging campaign life was extended to over 10,000 heats. A good CO product with a high repeatability was executed by implementing an improved gas pattern, daily process parameters and continuous gas valve maintenance. Development of the purging plug was implemented in order to reduce “back attack,” as well as reduce the wear rate. This paper reviews the key aspects behind innovations in the approach to ensure a longer bottom purging campaign life.
