Some DR processes are classified as self-reformers because reducing gases are generated inside the shaft furnace by methane reforming catalyzed by DRI. Experiments were performed by injecting a mixture of CH4, H2O and H2 through a bed of DRI at different temperatures. In non-carburizing conditions (CH4/H2O = 0.5), results showed that below 900°C the rate-controlling step is chemical reaction, and above this point diffusion plays an important role. Experiments will be performed in carburizing conditions (CH4/H2O = 4) in which methane reforming and DRI carburization are expected to happen simultaneously. The two sets of results will help with the fundamental understanding of self-reforming in DR processes.
