Tracks: Rolling Process Modeling, Simulation & Control

Strip biting is considered the most critical moment for hot rolling. Successful biting is the first step towards successful rolling; otherwise the strip cannot be threaded into the mill stand and cobble will be happened due to material accumulation. Possibility of having such problem will be increased while using lubrication during the strip head biting. Based on an empirical experience, this paper presents taxonomy for biting cobbles during the hot rolling process in addition to a scientific study for determining its possible causes. In order to have a successful biting and reduce the biting cobbles, a new approach is proposed supported by an empirical evaluation after applying it in Level 2 Pass Schedule model of EZDK hot strip mill plant in Egypt.
