Tracks: Motors, Drives & Arc Flash

In the past few decades, the steel industry has spent a great deal of resources in reducing its energy intensity. However, very little information is available about how to properly select motors and drives for this industry. Because a lot has changed in motor design (both low- and medium-voltage) and applications of drives, this paper will focus on the state of the art in design of large motors and drives, both DC and AC and challenges associated with it. This paper will address the advancement in design, analysis, protection and applications of large electrical motors and drives, with special focus to the steel industry needs. Proper selection, operation and maintenance of these motors and drives are needed because these are the workhorses of the industry. Proper procurement of such devices reduces downtime, improves reliability and minimizes loss of production.
