This article defines a new approach to the definition of the main parameters of the secondary circuit of an EAF. The different options of delta closing bus bars, water-cooled cables and electrode holder arms are compared. This paper takes into consideration the influence of these parameters on the three phase impedances and describes the effect of impedance of the different components of the secondary circuit on the process behavior. Considered are the impact of the imbalance and the different impedance values of the three phases on the stability and productivity of the furnace, energy and refractory consumption, and electrical line quality effects of the EAF. These data are compared to real data obtained from steel producers with EAFs. A new mathematical method is proposed to determinate the optimal configuration of the secondary circuit.
