Arc flash is an extremely dangerous and volatile phenomenon characterized by a rapid discharge of energy resulting in a fiery explosion. In the metals industry, economic considerations mandate minimum downtimes and often require service personnel to work on energized equipment. NFPA 70E requires that an Arc Flash Hazard (AFH) analysis and risk assessment be performed on systems where workers are exposed to energized equipment. This paper discusses several AFH mitigation techniques, including administrative controls, engineering controls, safe design practices, equipment labeling and PPE selection, in order to achieve adequate protection against arc flash hazards in new and retrofit systems.
