Tracks: Motors, Drives & Arc Flash

Non-linear electrical loads, such as large drives and rectifiers that are required in iron and steel mills, produce unwanted harmonics and voltage distortions. Looped power distribution systems can be used to increase the reliability and reduce such harmonic distortions in the system. Conventional protection schemes for looped power systems involve the use of directional overcurrent relays with staggered time delays. This results in dangerously high arc flash levels. This paper presents a fully implemented low-cost high-speed protection methodology, based on IEC 61850, which keeps arc flash levels low and provides better personnel safety.
