Tracks: Shaft Furnace Technology

This paper shows the latest upgrades of one of the most efficient EAFs in the world. Due to actual scrap qualities and the necessity to be flexible in raw material input, as well as our aim to achieve a full automatic process, the preheating furnace has been further improved. Using the example of the Quantum in TYASA, Mexico, this paper outlines several possibilities to improve shaft-based scrap preheating furnaces. An upgrade of the dedusting system with LOMAS gas analyzer enables an efficient post-combustion control and a detection of any water leakages in the furnace. Furthermore, the installation of an automatic temperature and sample lance, as well as an automated taphole sand filling system, are the major levers to further raise the safety level and manless operation.
