Tracks: Direct Reduction Technology Research & Development

Aiming at optimizing the direct reduction process, we developed a mathematical model of the iron ore reduction in a shaft furnace: REDUCTOR. Extending previous approaches, this model is two-dimensional, steady-state, and includes a sophisticated description of the relevant physicochemical and thermal phenomena. Eight heterogeneous and two homogeneous chemical reactions are taken into account. The kinetics of the reduction reactions is calculated in a single-pellet sub-model. Two-dimensional maps of the temperatures and compositions of the gas and solid phases reveal the details of the transformations inside the furnace. The calculated values are in good agreement with available industrial data.
