Tracks: Steelmaking Refractories & Challenges

No significant changes have been introduced in the refractory binder system since the development of cured MgO-C bricks. Several sources of pitch compounds and novolac and resol phenolic resins are applied as typical binders for most of the types of carbon-containing refractories. In the 2000s, a new carbon binder was designed from a blend of powder pitch and the resins, providing bricks of excellent performance in a wide temperature range. The next generation of cured MgO-C bricks is based on a new binder system with zero carbon content, zero fume and also environmentally friendly. This work presents the development of the zero emission technology for MgO-C bricks for steel ladles and customers’ performance compared to traditional carbon products.
