Tracks: Lowering the Cost of Maintenance & Reliability

In electric furnace steelmaking, it is important to have good slag practices for many reasons: slag dissipates formed oxides, covers the liquid steel which reduces heat losses, increases electrical yields by covering the arc, as well as protects the inside of the furnace from arc radiation. This paper defines the role of slag in the longevity of EAF equipment. Slag and the protection it provides are not often discussed from a maintenance point of view. The slag chemistry, viscosity and insulating values will be covered.
