Scrap & Materials
Many steel mills have a copper requirement for their shredded ferrous scrap which is sometimes difficult to achieve. The Shred-1 Ballistic Separator from Eriez uses magnets coupled with a high-speed belt to pull the high-quality ferrous (low copper) away from the copper-bearing material (less magnetic). The Shred-1 divides the material into two streams, one low in copper and the other rich in copper. The low-copper stream is typically 0.016–0.17% copper. This material stream does not require any labor to pick copper and is typically about 75% of the total material flow. Without the use of a Shred-1, typical scrap yards produce a ferrous product that contains about 0.033–0.035% copper. By incorporating the Shred-1, steel mills have the opportunity to get the low copper requirement desired by the mill. An added benefit is the copper pickings that generate additional revenue for the mill.
