Open eye formation at the tundish during continuous casting exposes liquid steel to the atmosphere. New inclusions are created and steel cleanliness is compromised. Although this phenomenon is well known in the steel industry, there is a lack of fundamental understanding. At ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s No. 1 continuous caster, work is under way to quantify the impact of open eye formation on steel cleanliness. This paper discusses the various morphologies of open eyes observed during plant trials, and correlates these observations with already published numerical modeling work. Liquid steel surface velocity measurements at the tundish using the nail dipping technique are also discussed.
