In this work we present a new and innovative approach for steel-ladle maintenance which is based on a cooperative robotic assistance system. Our system is based on the idea of combining the strength and precision of a robot with the competence and ability of correct assessment of an experienced steel worker, therefore building a team of a human and a machine to solve the maintenance task. A prototype was built at a German steel plant. We provide a description of it and its tools, as well as some results of its current implementation. The major benefits include an improved ergonomic workplace by transferring the hard work to the robot, as well as allowing for an increase in precision and documentation.
