Tracks: Raw Materials — Sintering & Pelletizing

The pelletizing process is highly sensitive to the type of iron ore used, as it is one of the prime raw materials required for making pellets. Since its inception, the Tata Steel pellet plant had been using Noamundi blended iron ore fines. Due to non-availability of iron ore from Noamundi mines, Joda and purchased ores were used for pelletizing. Variation in the type of iron ore fines required tweaking of the process parameters accordingly in order to maintain production with good quality. However, in absence of a blending facility at the pellet plant, stabilizing the pelletizing process was a challenge, as the type of ore received and its quantity were uncertain. This paper highlights the constraints with respect to the type of ore mix used and the adjustments made in grinding, green balling and the induration area for improving the pelletizing process.
