Corporacion Aceros Arequipa, based in Pisco, Ica, Peru, carried out coking tests with domestic bituminous coals, with the aim of obtaining a blast furnace–quality coke. Through the free swelling index test (ASTM D720), six coals were identified. These coals were submitted to concentration tests by gravimetric methods such as washability (ASTM D4371) and equipment, in external and our own laboratories. The results were a recovery of 75% of the weight of coal, decreasing ash from 24 to 4% and sulfur from 10 to 0.9 by means of Humphrey spirals. Coking tests were carried out in our own 40-kg coke oven, using stamped charging, heating from 800°C to 1050°C in 18 hours, and water quenching. The use of up to 80% of concentrated Peruvian coals with acceptable FSI and G Index obtained a coke of high mechanical strength (Micum 10 and 40).
