At SSAB Montpelier, a comprehensive strategy has been developed for efficient melting and refining of steel in the EAF through optimization of scrap charging and chemical energy. The scrap selection program involves optimizing scrap selection for back-to-back charging of two buckets of scrap into the EAF or adding the second bucket after a short melting cycle. The chemical program involves increasing the use of natural gas and oxygen for scrap melting. Both the scrap and chemical energy optimization programs have resulted in significant improvements in key EAF performance metrics. These results are summarized in this paper.
