Tracks: EAF Refractory

Electric arc furnace (EAF) shell change practice operation was analyzed in 2015 and 2016 at five different Italian steel plants: Ori Martin, Alfa Acciai, Feralpi, Accieierie Venete and TenarisDalmine. Each of these steel plants changes its entire EAF shell every two to four weeks, instead of repairing the refractory in place. This practice is aimed at reducing the operation downtime and delays due to gunning, and helps the plant to control refractory brick consumption. This paper analyzes the tasks that are involved in this process, including hose connection, platform cleaning and crane movement synchronization. Each plant's savings are reported and thoroughly discussed.
