Tracks: Blast Furnace Operations — Campaign Life & Productivity

This paper provides an overview of the technology advancements and best operating practices used at Lake Erie Works’ No. 1 blast furnace. The blast furnace is the last blast furnace built at a greenfield integrated steel facility in North America and is currently in the 20th year of its third campaign. A review is provided of the facility’s history, equipment and technology-based controls, as well as of the furnace’s current campaign. Advantages of a relatively new blast furnace operation include the capability of live data capture, process models, detailed monitoring of the burden profile, tuyere level conditions and hearth expansion, and thermal monitoring. Technology advancements make it possible to fine-tune control of many process parameters on the furnace using the monitoring tools.
