Tracks: Caster Technology

In October 2015, Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH revamped its slab caster No. 2. The 2-strand caster is designed as a bow-type caster with a main radius of 10.5 m and produces slabs of 820–2,000 mm width and 250–320 mm (optional) thickness. The scope of the project included a new mold, hydraulic oscillator and segment 0, including comprehensive control systems and revamped segment support frames in the bow area. The remote-controlled mold narrow faces for optimized width changes during casting feature the “Delta Speed” software. A high slab quality is guaranteed through the width-dependent air mist spray-cooling system, fully controlled by the Dynamic Solidification Control (DSC) model. Salzgitter is using the machine to cast microalloyed steels, heavy-plate grades and sour gas–resistant tube and pipe grades according to the API-5L standard and HIC resistant grades.
