With the increasing market need for continuously annealed cold rolled sheets with good formability, it is required to produce ultralow-carbon steel with consistency in terms of chemistry (low carbon). The decarburization is done at the RH. Higher RH out-carbon leads to the downgradation of that heat beyond a certain limit. The cases of high RH out-carbon in some heats led to the study of the process and quality parameters that affect RH out-carbon. In this paper, the knowledge acquired during the processing of ultralow-carbon heats at LD2 SC has been discussed. Many aspects of the process were studied. The study led to several improvements in the existing system which significantly improved the control level in terms of RH out-carbon and reduced downgradation of heats on account of high RH out-carbon.
