Tracks: New Developments in DR Plant Operations

Mining companies, big and small, can add significant value to their iron ore by producing direct reduced iron (DRI), especially if they are operating in a market with an established EAF presence like the U.S., or in a market with poor scrap availability like some regions of South America. The Micro-Module DR plant, thanks to its compact size, more affordable CAPEX and low OPEX allow for high-carbon DRI to be produced on-site and give junior mining companies the possibility to enter the DRI merchant market and/or even to become vertically integrated and producing locally high-grade steel. This paper will examine the cases of two mining companies in South America that will use the Micro-Module ZR technology to produce DRI and analyze the reasons and advantages of their choices.
