Installation and Commissioning of SMART® Segments at SSAB Americas Mobile Facility

Segregation of solute elements during continuous casting may lead to their enrichment in the mid-thickness region of the as-cast product, causing their concentrations to exceed those of the bulk section. The resulting microstructural inhomogeneity can significantly impair the performance of the finished product. With the objectives of improving product structural integrity and expanding product offerings, SSAB Americas has recently installed and commissioned SMART® Segments supplied by Primetals for dynamic soft reduction during continuous casting at its facility in Mobile, Ala., USA. This paper provides a general overview of roll gap optimization with the application of the SMART Segments and the subsequent marked improvement in centerline quality and product performance.
