Patients facing ostomy surgery are often ill prepared for the impact this will have on their lives. They may be hesitant to discuss their emotional and sexual concerns, and are often embarrassed to raise the topic. The ostomy nurse plays a vital role in educating and informing patients, and should not hesitate to include this topic in pre-operative and post-operative care of ostomy patients. This session will provide valuable information and tips how to best acknowledge this important part of our humanity, and how to discuss this in an open and informative manner, leaving attendees better equipped to address those concerns with their ostomy patients.
