Tracks: Performance and Reliability, Poster Presentations

IEC 61400-12-1 has historically been the industry standard for wind turbine power performance measurements. One aspect of this standard defines how to assess the terrain at the site. If the terrain is found to be sufficiently complex, a site calibration is required. A site calibration is an additional data collection campaign that occurs before the wind project is built and can significantly add to project costs. IEC 61400-12-1 Edition 2 was released in March 2017. Among other things, the methodology for how to assess the terrain was updated, including the limits for the pass/fail criteria for when site calibration is required. The differences in methodology for Ed 1 and Ed 2 terrain assessment are described. Two case studies are shown that compare the Ed 1 and Ed 2 terrain assessment results. Anytime there is a new or updated industry standard, there is a transition period where all stakeholders need to understand the differences and their possible impacts. This poster aims to increase understanding of one aspect of Ed 2.
