N4A Concurrent Workshop Group IV: Student-Athlete Welfare/Mental Health Track - Engaging Student-Athletes in Peer-Support Mental Health (Room Anaheim)

Launching and/or sustaining a mental-health program with and for student-athletes can be daunting. This session will provide and outline of how one program began, how it gained traction, and how it continues to grow. Particular attention is given to partnering with campus resources (counseling centers, public safety, student affairs, residence life, spiritual life, etc.), and to creating sustainable outreach led by student-athletes. Examples of supporting injured peers, support during stressful events or time periods, and creating a wellness culture will be discussed. Participants will take away actionable ideas from a range of budgets and time commitments, with the outcome being to build sustainable initiatives that make sense for a variety of different-sized departments and campuses - since mental health and wellness affects us all.
