Project & Construction Management
Installation of a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) is one of the most critical activities in the entire chain of erection, start-up, hot trial and commissioning of a steel plant. Because of its huge volume of work in terms of civil and structural quantities, equipment, sequential equipment erection, high-capacity special-purpose cranes, piping quantities, and the complexity of handling integrated micro-scheduling for erection and testing sequences for process automation and instrumentation, the start-up of BOFs poses a great challenge to the executors for timely start-up. This paper highlights the challenges faced in the above areas during the start-up of BOFs in ISP and RINL in India.
