A Study of High-Temperature Defects Detected on Light-Gauge Coated Sheet Steel (Room 307)

Light-gauge coated steel can perhaps contain imperfections that may be due to subsurface or surface defect on base metal for a number of possible reasons. This paper discusses the methods for identification of various types of surface defects caused by copper, sulfur and boron in light-gauge coated sheet steel. The influence of the presence of these elements on steel surface has been studied. Samples with defects were characterized using optical microscope, scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction. These techniques were used to identify different types of defects that have a common appearance on coated flat-roll steel.
