Optimizing Application of Chlorine to Continuous Caster Spray Water System (Room 407)

This paper will detail the various modifications made to the chlorination program for a continuous caster spray system. The objective of the modifications was to optimize filter performance, along with spray nozzle cleanliness. Modifications included an evaluation of a bio-dispersant to ascertain whether the combination of bleach and bio-dispersant could improve surface cleanliness versus just bleach alone. Chlorine bleach has been the primary biocide for contact cooling systems in the steel industry for many decades. Optimizing its use is critical, because overfeed of bleach can promote corrosion of equipment, while underfeed will allow microbes to promote deposits in strainers/nozzles.
