An Optimization Model for Making Alloy Additions During Steelmaking at SSAB Iowa (Room 411)

Alloy addition during steel ladle refining is the most important processing step toward ensuring that the steel meets customer specifications. Also, since alloy additions depend somewhat on operator judgment, it is difficult to consistently employ an optimal and cost-effective combination of alloys. To address these issues, a comprehensive alloy addition model has been developed and successfully implemented at the SSAB Iowa mill. The model automatically recommends the types and amounts of alloys to be added using linear optimization algorithm. The result has been a significant alloy cost savings along with the improvement of operational accuracy and efficiency.
