Steel mills buy shredded ferrous scrap from various scrap processors around the country. Steel mills have a copper requirement, which is sometimes difficult to achieve. Scrap processors typically pick the copper bearing material away, which is very labor intensive. Shred-1 processors typically produce a ferrous that only contains about 0.016–0.017% copper. By incorporating the Shred-1 processor on-site at steel mills, the mills then have the opportunity to purchase the low-cost-per-ton frag and process it to get the low copper requirement desired by the mill, which in turn generates additional revenue for the mill.
