The BOF vessel of LD No. 1, Tata Steel, Jamshedpur Works, was reported to fail prematurely. On examination, abnormal wear in the metal bath region and upper region above the bath level was observed. To understand and resolve the issue, the trends of numerous process parameters were analyzed and a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was performed. The CFD analyses revealed that, during the whole campaign, the supersonic lance height with respect to bath height was maintained in such a manner that it was creating a splashing regime as well as a very dynamic plume. Based on the findings, an optimum lance height pattern for new BOF campaigns was maintained.
