A Way to Produce Higher Steel Grades by Retrofitting Existing Syngas Production Plants (Room 402)

Traditionally, worldwide DRI production has been limited by the requirement to secure several pre-conditions at the same time and at the same place: functional logistics, availability of high-quality iron ore and inexpensive natural gas. The popular assumption that DRI is produced via natural gas is no longer valid. The Energiron process uses a wide range of reducing agents, such as syngas, coke oven gas and BF offgas — whichever is locally available at the cheapest price. Existing facilities using these hydrogen-rich gases for electrical energy production may consider a retrofitting to feed Energiron direct reduction plants and produce a higher-profit product: DRI.
