Strip processing furnaces are highly non-linear and delayed systems on which automation control and unsophisticated math are not sufficiently reliable. In response to a growing demand for maximizing process efficiency, Virtuo®, a Fives thermal solution based on physical models and sophisticated control strategies, aims to increase control reliability during transients with applicable optimized control methods. Among those, Fives’ Model Predictive Control (MPC) uses a comprehensive proactive model, rather than reactive calculation, suitable for such non-linear systems. Applying MPC to industrial furnaces is very promising, and tangible amelioration has led to minimized reject rates and increased productivity.
