Development of Basic Gunning Mixes: Comparison of Laboratory Trials, Thermochemical Calculations and Steel Plant Trials (Room 319)

Vessels of steel-producing and steel-refining processes are in practice mainly repaired with basic gunning mixes to enhance its durability and availability. Continuous and fast developments of these products are needed due to the wide variety of customer requirements. This raises the question whether the development work can be accelerated by thermochemical calculations (FactSage simulation) and/or by determining physical properties in the laboratory (CCS, RUL) and if these results correlate with the practical suitability of the products. This paper documents the interaction of different test and calculation methods with the results obtained in practice during steel plant trials.
