Interstitial-free, high-strength steel used for door applications was reported to have band marks after press forming along the rolling direction. The band appeared after 5% deformation during press forming. Investigation of this defect revealed higher phosphorus and manganese in the band area. This phosphorus distribution contributes to local mechanical property variation, which later emerges as a pattern on the surface. The study led to the conclusion that these marks were due to the segregated phosphorus concentration in internal cracks generated during continuous casting of the slab. It was found that controlled casting and effective cooling during solidification are desirable in reducing phosphorus bands.
