Stricter regulations on the environment are welcomed by society but represent a challenge for the existing meltshops. Two experiences from different Countries are presented in this paper. First is the revamp of the secondary suction line of a 370,000-tpy plant, respecting the limits of 0.00023 gr/dscf particulate and 0.1 ng/m3 dioxin/furan emission. In the second, the installation of a new hot quenching tower is described, fit for 180,000 Nm3/hour and 90-ton electric arc furnace. The target value of dioxin/furan emission of 0.45 ng/Nm3 has been smashed with the achievement of 0.171 ng/Nm3 average emission.
