Use of Mold Coatings to Extend CSP® Broad Face Copper Life (Room 408)

For many years, attempts were made to nickel-plate the meniscus of CSP® copper mold plates with little success. Over the past few years, Steel Dynamics Inc.-Butler Div. has developed a program for extending the life of their CSP broad-face copper plates by incorporating full-face nickel plating into their mold refurbishment program. SMS group has developed a process specifically designed to allow for extended service time for full-face nickel plating on high-heat-flux molds. A discussion on the cost benefits, plate performance and limitations associated with their use will be presented.
