Using an optical thickness gauge in a hot rolling mill is one of the bigger challenges in contact-free measurement technology. Several steps of development had been performed to fulfill those needs. Besides a mechanical concept, which is controllable regarding the thermal impacts, a sufficient cooling to protect the electronic components and at least an innovative sensor design were realized to master the task of supplying a huge measurement range with the highest precision in the most critical area — the end of the range near the passline, where the material with the smallest tolerances has to be measured.
